Horizon Call
The Horizon Call app enables highly bandwidth-efficient VoIP calls over a smartphone using a GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 4G, WiFi or WiMax connection. It is currently available for iPhone and Android.
Other mobile VoIP apps typically only offer service over 3G and WiFi connections, with significant levels of call dropping because they are less bandwidth efficient. Horizon enables both a better user experience over 3G and WiFi, as well as use over data-capable 2G technologies – enabling you to address a much broader base of subscribers.
It has a simple, familiar interface so the user makes a call just as they normally would, but with the added feature of allowing them to choose from three different levels of call quality for optimal cost/quality control:
| Level 3 | 5.50kbps |
| Level 1 | 1.90kbps |
| Level 2 | 3.50kbps |
(Bandwidth required for both talking and listening. IP headers are excluded at all levels)
The user has the option of setting their preferred quality level as a default, or dynamically changing it before or even during each call. A data counter keeps the user fully informed of how much they're consuming as they talk – either as an increasing number of kilobytes for pay-monthly subscribers or as a reducing number of units for pay-as-you-go subscribers.
The app includes all the standard call features:
- Recents – missed, dialled and received calls
- Voicemail – send and receive
- Contacts – uses smartphone's central contacts repository
